WHAT IS CVD?

CVD is an acronym for chemical vapor deposition. Specifically, a synthetic diamond prepared by CVD techniques in which material is deposited from a gas onto a substrate and that chemical reactions are involved.

WHY IS IT DIFFICULT TO SYNTHESIZE A DIAMOND ?

A diamond is comprised of carbon, like coal or graphite. The significant difference between material is the arrangement of the carbon atoms, also known as its crystal lattice. Graphite is a more stable carbon allotype (form), thus the rarity of natural diamonds. To convert carbon into a diamond, the application of high pressure and high temperatures (HPHT) is required, resulting in the stable carbon allotype. Discovered in the 1970s, the ability to deposit diamond from the gas phase was discovered. For diamond CVD a carbon containing gas is decomposed and the carbon atoms are deposited on a surface. With proper conditions, the growth of diamond crystals can be enhanced, and the growth of graphite is suppressed.

WHAT GASES ARE USED FOR DIAMOND CVD?

Normally, a mixture of hydrogen and methane

WHAT ARE TYPICAL GROWTH TEMPERATURES?

700-900°C. Lower temperatures are possible, however, it will strongly reduce growth rates

HOW FAST DO CVD DIAMONDS GROW?

The CVD Diamond growth process is extremely slow such as on large areas (>100 cm2) a diamond growth rate is between 0.1 and 10 micron per hour. Whereas, for small areas (<1 cm2) much higher growth rates (>100 micron per hour) have been demonstrated.
